Now in its fourth year of contributing to the Southampton Mela Festival, Loveart saw the transformation of Hoglands Park into a dazzling spectacle of colour, music and performance art on July 19th.

Hosted by Art Asia, it was a free celebration of musical styles, exhilarating dance acts and mouth watering food, offering a wide range of family activities celebrating south Asian culture.

Thousands of people attended the extravaganza to experience music from Indian, classical, folk, world, Qawwali, Asian fusion and bhangra artists.

Public Art Southampton

This was a piece of public Art commissioned by the Public Arts officer in Southampton - Liz Smith. Built using wine bottles and a constructed perspex wine rack with optics. An impressive site, installed in one of the oldest parts of Southampton - The city Vaults, Lankesters Vault. Several 'Loveart' Artists help to install this 390 strong wine rack which will be part of a series of pieces of art produced by the artist, Simon Watkinson, for the City.

Busy, Busy, Busy!

Wow its been a busy term. Thus the lack of time to report back on Artistic practices!
Loveart has this term been providing an art service at one local primary school. For one afternoon a week the school has run a 'university' for the children: Children are given a range of creative learning opportunities and subscribe to one for 1/2 a term.

Loveart provided a 1/2 term scheme of work for improving artistic skills and art history knowledge for a group of 30 children, ages 5-11, working together. The university which has now run for a term provides the school with professionals delivering key skills and teachers with ppa time.

Topics covered included: Surrealism, Pointillism, Pre-Raphaelites, Collage, Abstraction, Monoprinting and resulted in a large scale display work using all the children's work.

Future Graphic Designers

Southampton Solent University (UK), students on a graphics and illlustration course took part in an activity planned to encourage thinking about movement and colour in advertising culture.

The activity posted above involved life drawing, using this as a starting point, students developed shapes from these sketches to influence an advertisement made to stimulate a chosen emotion/feeling in the viewer.

Trainee teachers from King Alfreds College Winchester came along to the gallery to see what resources would be available for them to use in the future.

The following steps allow for this printmaking process to be accesible for children of all ages:

Prepare an image to print on A4 white paper
Have ink/rollers ready to use

Model printmaking process to a group around a central table
Have print stations on each table.

1) Engrave pattern onto pressprint tile.

2) Roll on first colour & print onto coloured sugar paper twice*

3) Engrave onto tile again, take out pieces of the tile leaving areas of previous colour.

4) Register tile with first print - place tile face down, creating final print.

* By creating two prints of the first colour but only 'finishing' one print using a second colour, the children can clearly see the development of the process.

The age group frequently guided around Southampton City Art Gallery is between 7-11 (KS 2). It is uplifting to see children interacting and responding to artwork around them. Children seem to appreciate more classical work from Baroque and the Early Renaissance periods.

What has influenced children to believe that great art is defined through time spent on a piece of work and a craft mastered?

It is time to encourage those who enjoy artwork to understand the value of conceptual art, development of ideas used when creating. When children are given the opportunity to believe their work is valuable, because of ideas based on representations of the world around them, not on their ability to measure their craftsmansip against a peer, children will access the arts more easily.

Visiting an Art gallery is a valuable aid in developing childrens awareness of the world around them. An introduction to various different types and styles of art proves exciting and stimulates questions and ideas. Four out of thirty (12%) of children in this group had been to a gallery before. The current image shows a piece of artwork created by Simon Grennan and Christopher Sperandio, this work was used to stimulate thoughts about modern day portraiture, colour and composition.

If you are a teacher viewing this site for help with resources. There will be many links available, I will cite the ones recommended by other teachers and personally used, in postings.

The first recommendation is with thanks to two primary school teachers who recently attended a training day. They have been using LCP plans to develop a scheme of work within their school. This resource allows for planning to incorporate all aspects of teaching neccesary to fulfil Artsmark award criteria. There are links to LCP on this site.

Art training day - Primary education

Today 7 more teachers became a little more confident about teaching Art in primary education!!

Due to the sucess of these inset days held once a month, we have decided to develop extra programmes based on very helpful feedback.

Ideas for inclusion on future traning days:
- Skills based workshops: A day specifically based around practical ideas for you to take back to the classroom. To include: Sculpture, working with wire/willow, printing, drawing and collage.

Surreal Activity!

This week St Marks primary school were investigating some interesting and familiar techniques invented by Surrealist artists to create some very bizarre creatures and scenes! The children practised 3 techniques invented by artists from the Surrealist movement:

Two 'automatic' drawing techniques
1 - PVA used as an adhesive for the layers of sand that were added.
2 - A random inked pattern duplicated to leave a symetrical design.
And Frottage (rubbing)
3 - Rubbing over textured surfaces creating basic shapes.

Resulting in: Dancing Poodle's, humming birds, bulls, dragons,seaguls, butterflies etc, etc...!

Construction of a Diatom!!??

A Diatom is a small organism that has the unfortunate privaledge of being the first animal in the food chain on the beautiful seafront sands at Weston Shore.

Landscape architects, working with artist Abigail Downer have been helping to develop the designs for many of the public art projects along Weston Shore. Loveart artist Kate Whyley will be working alongside 3 other artists (Abigail, Dan and Rosie) as well as Liz Smith (Southampton city council Public arts officer) to create Southamptons biggest land drawing on the landfill site at Weston Shore: Come down Saturday and Sunday afternoon and see what we are creating!

This fantastic day combined two of the galleries most popular workshops: screen printing and T-shirt design. Artist Kate Whyley helped children create a unique T-shirt personalised with their very own design that they printed.

Monoprinting

All years bar one were involved with Loveart projects throughout w.b 10th July at Portswood Primary's Artsweek.

It was exciting to work with the children in their environmental area. Inspired by their surroundings they created a huge flower garden collage made up of 360 prints. The work was then displayed in an exhibition alongside other school arts projects that the children undertook during the week.

Thanks to the Arts co-ordinator, management team and all staff for making Loveart feel so welcome!

Mela Festival 2006

Children involved in Loveart activities at the Mela festival this year featured on
Meridian television!

Today: Saturday 12th August 140 children monoprinted 'henna' designs on T-shirts. Some made amazing unqiue painted T-shirts which were displayed at the Mela festival organised by Art Asia. Children were inspired by Asian designs at this fantastic festival at Hoglands Park in Southampton. The activities were free and gave children the opportunity to experiment with colour, pattern and printmking skills.
